BL Lacerta

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 2006
BL LACERTA performs a wild live improv musical score to the classic Fritz Lang film METROPOLIS.

Metropolis was created in Germany by Austrian director Fritz Land and his wife, Thea von Harbou in 1925-26. it has been hailed as a pioneering effort in many film genres, including science fiction and action adventure, though it's true worth as socio-economic drama championing the labor movement cannot be overestimated. it's theme is as relevant today's corporate heavy America as it was in post WWI Germany. it's all about the haves and the have nots and the sea between.

BL Lacerta was one of the earliest music ensembles to play at the Bath House in the early 80s. their 1984 show, collaborating with legendary comic troupe, Victor Dada, introduced many to the avant garde performance artists who accompanied the beginning of the modern deep ellum scene. Club Dada hosted such groups and their neo beat philosophy. everything was fair game as universes of style and tradition were reborn through free improvisation and enigmatic joy. Lacerta went on to successful residencies at the Dallas Museum of Art and lecture performance residency at the University of Texas at Dallas.
They collaborated with international artists John Cage and Pauline Oliveros as well as a host of dancers, poets, painters and, eventually, turned to silent movies. their christmas classic, Charlie Chaplin's Gold Rush, was performed at Dada from 1989 to 2001. Metropolis has always been one of their favorite and most challenging vehicles, demanding in form and stamina. the last time it was performed at the Bath House, outside as it will be this time, a tremendous storm blew across the lake just as the flood scene began on film and people and equipment had to be rushed inside to avoid catastrophe.
It's time to finish the story.

BL Lacerta is Kim Corbet (trombone/keyboards/toys), Chad Evans (electronic drums/cello/toys), Bruce Richardson (electronic atmospherics) and Kenny Withrow (guitar/everything else).
