IN BACK OF BEYOND

Works in Mosaic by Sonia King

In Back of Beyond is an exploration of the natural world in mosaic. Stone, glass, found objects and more are used to create map-like landscapes that are both familiar and unreal. In this exhibit, the ancient art of mosaics is reinterpreted as a contemporary sculptural medium.

Sonia has visited ancient mosaic sites and studied with modern mosaic artists around the world. Like contemporary European mosaicists, she is integrating traditional techniques with contemporary fine art sensibilities. Her work is exhibited both nationally and internationally and is represented in private, public and corporate collections.

Sonia is a founder and Advisory Board member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists as well as the instructor of mosaic at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas. Additionally, Sonia has been granted membership in the Associazione Internazionale Mosacisti Contemporanei in Ravenna, Italy. She recently spoke on current trends in American mosaic art to the British Association for Modern Mosaics in London. Sonia is the author of the upcoming book from Sterling Publishers - The World Book of Mosaics.
